Setting Standards. When one decides to name ones debut album Setting Standards, one instantly calls for immense pretentiousness. Setting Standards. I mean, what the hell kind of title is that? Could an album have a more ego centric name? Lazee wants to share with us that after this, there will be something to measure the pop/hip hop/bounce-scene by. The question is if the title fulfills what it promises?
Honestly, I’ve expected great things of Lazee. I loved Rock Away and if there is one single track that indeed set standards for the genre this year, it was definitely Rock Away. The second single, Hold On ft. Neverstore, was equally great. Lazee masters the whole pop/hip hop thing excellently and even though you want to hate him and his will to take over the universe, you can‘t. You just can’t deny that he is a star. Tracks like Back To 85 and Fast Life makes Lazee Lizzle tickle your fancy like Madonna, while Heartless shows that he can do Grime and Can’t Change Me brings out a little bit of Rock. He’s like the McGyver of music; you give him some bubblegum, a wire and a pin, and he’ll give you a hit.
This album is a presentation of all things Lazee is good at. In spite of one or two tracks that leave you wondering, if this cd doesn’t make you move, you should check yourself for paralysis. The album wont stimulate your intellect or make you “aware of society’s great evil” but it doesn’t intend to. This is happy music. It’s not the hip hop-Lazee that did Skrilla Anthem, but that’s ok. We know he’s in there and he’s not going away.
